Digestive System Flashcards
What are the two methods of digestion?
Chemical and Mechanical
What is mechanical digestion?
Physically breaks down the food into smaller pieces to increase surface area for more efficient chemical digestion
What are the specific enzymes for chemical digestion?
Carbohydrases, lipases, proteases, nucleases
How does CD work in the mouth?
Saliva lubricates food and salivary glands produce amylase to digest carbs
What is the PH in the mouth?
6-8
How does MD work in the mouth?
Teeth digest food into bolus
How does MD work in the oesophagus?
When swallowing, epiglottis closes off trachea forcing bolus into oesophagus
What is the name of the muscular contractions in the oesophagus and its function?
Peristalsis which moves the bolus into the stomach
What do gastric glands produce in the stomach?
Hydrochloric acid, Protease,
Gastric lipase,
Mucus
What is the MD in the stomach?
Stomach churns, mixing bolus with gastric juices, producing a soft, semi-fluid mixture called chyme
What is the PH in the stomach?
1-3
What enzymes function in the stomach?
Carbohydrases can no longer function
Proteases can function and gastric lipases digest lipids
What does stomach mucus do?
Protects the stomach from protease activity
How long is the small intestine?
7m long
What are the two different parts of the small intestine called?
Duodenum (first 10cm), Ileum
