Digestive System Flashcards
what are macronutrients?
essential nutrients required by the body in relatively large quantities.
what are micronutrients?
essential nutrients required by the body in relatively small quantities, including vitamins and minerals.
what are vitamins?
organic materials (contain carbon) that regulate chemical reactions in bodily processes.
what are minerals?
inorganic nutrients (do not contain carbon) which regulate chemical reactions
what are the 3 macronutrients?
carbohydrates, proteins, lipids
what do carbohydrates do?
primary source of energy
what do proteins do?
build and repair tissues and enzymes
what do lipids do?
store energy, insulate and form cellular membranes
what type of nutrient is C, B, A, D, E and K?
vitamins
what type of nutrient is calcium, iron, sodium and zinc?
minerals
what are the 2 types of macronutrients?
vitamins and minerals
what does it mean if something is organic
has carbon
what does it mean if something is inorganic
doesn’t have carbon
what’s ingestion
the act of eating or drinking
what’s digestion
breaking nutrients into smaller molecules
what’s absorption
taking up small molecules into the circulatory system
what’s elimination
removing undigested materials from the digestive track
what are the 2 types of digestion
mechanical and chemical
what is chemical digestion
breaking of chemical bonds to produce smaller molecules
what’s mechanical digestion
chewing, chopping or grinding food into smaller pieces (physically) to increase surface area
what is bolus
a mixture of chewed food and saliva
what is an enzyme
a biological catalyst (protein that binds two different things), typically a protein, that accelerates and facilities chemical reactions
what is a catalyst
a protein that binds two different things
what’s the esophagus
a long, muscle-encased tube that connects the pharynx to the stomach
