Digestive System Flashcards
What are the 8 functions of the digestive system?
- Ingestion
- Mastication
- Propulsion (deglutition and peristalsis)
- Mass movement
- Secretion
- Digestion
- Absorption
- Elimination
What are the 2 organ types of the digestive system?
Alimentary Canal (GI Tract) The one way canal that runs from mouth to anus that directly digests ingested food
Accessory Organs are organs with secretory, endocrine and assistive functions that assist in digestion but do not directly touch ingested food
Define the following
Mastication, deglutition and peristalsis
Mastication - chewing
Deglutition - swallowing
Peristalsis - wave like contractions and relaxation of the alimentary canal organs that help move and digest food
List the organs of the digestive system
Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, gallbladder
What are the 3 phases of digestive regulation
Cephalic - Regulated by the Vagus nerve. Signals sent to the stomach and fed back to the brain for smell, taste, appetite etc.
Gastric -
Intestinal -
List the cells of the stomach
Parietal cells - Secretion of HCl
Chief cells - Secrete inactive pepsin as pepsinogen
Enteroendocrine cells - Secrete hormones
