Digestive System Flashcards
The process by which organisms obtain and utilize their food
Nutrition
Process of taking food into the digestive system so that it maybe hydrolyzed or digested
Ingestion
The breakdown of food (either chemically or mechanically) in order to utilize nutrients
Digestion
Mechanical disgestion
Refers to the breakdown of food into digestible particles mainly by the teeth
Formed with saliva by the tongue
Bolus
An important connection to the digestive system through the thoracic cavity, which protects the heart and lungs
Esophagus
The back of the throat ; approximately 15cm long
Pharynx
Refers to the process by which compounds with a high molecular weight in the food are broken down into small substances that can be absorbed by the body
Chemical digestion
Flap of cartilage closes trachea (windpipe’ when swallowing ; food travels down to this organ
Epiglottis
A long tube that carries bile; a dark green to yellowish brown fluid, produced by the liver that aids the digestion of lipids in the small intestine
Bile duct
Pouch structure located near the liver which concentrates and stores bile
Gall bladder
It produces enzymes that directly or indirectly breakdown food
Pancreas
