A

A

Food passes down the gullet and into the stomach

A
  1. Contracts to push food around and mix it
  2. Produces Pepsin to break down any proteins
  3. Produces Hydrochloric acid which kills bacteria and provides the right environment for Pepsin to work

A

Neutralises Stomach acids
Emulsifies Fats ( Causes them to have a larger surface area)

How is the small intestine adapted to its function?

A

Contains lots of tiny hair like projections which increase SA. This means digested food can be absorbed much more quickly. Villi are only one cell thick and have a good blood supply which maintains the concentration gradient
