Digestive System Flashcards
What is the first process of the digestive system?
Food is physically broken down by chewing and salivary glands release saliva containing Amylase to break down Carbohydrates
What is the second process of the digestive system?
Food passes down the gullet and into the stomach
What is the role of the stomach in the digestive system?
- Contracts to push food around and mix it
- Produces Pepsin to break down any proteins
- Produces Hydrochloric acid which kills bacteria and provides the right environment for Pepsin to work
What is the role of the Small Intestine?
Absorbs digested food into the blood stream and produces Enzymes to aid digestion
What is the role of the Pancreas?
Produces lots of digestive enzymes and secreates pancreatic juices into the small intestine
Where is Bile produced?
In the Liver
Where is Bile stored?
In the Gall Bladder
What is the role of Bile in digestion?
Neutralises Stomach acids
Emulsifies Fats ( Causes them to have a larger surface area)
How is the small intestine adapted to its function?
Contains lots of tiny hair like projections which increase SA. This means digested food can be absorbed much more quickly. Villi are only one cell thick and have a good blood supply which maintains the concentration gradient
What is the role of the Large Intestine?
Absorbs excess water and leaves behined feces
Where are feces stored?
In the Rectum
