digestive system Flashcards
Main function of the Gl Tract?
It takes in large particles of food (polymers)
Makes them smaller (digestion)
Smallest molecules (monomers) are absorbed
Waste (non-absörbable matter) is eliminated
sucrose
sugar cane disaccharide of glucose and fructose
fructose
monosaccharide - goes to liver to make glucose and glycogen
Lactose
in SI becomes glucose and galactose (monomer of glucose, goes to liver)
Gastro-Intestinal (Gl) tract
the alimentary tract exists to break down large particles and molecules of food into smallest molecules which can be absorbed.
digestion 2 major activities
mechanical - teeth, churning by muscles,
chemicals - enzymes, bile
saliva
key enzyme
salivary amylase
ph 6.35 7.0
lingual lipase
salivary amylase
Enzyme that commences its activity in the mouth
Activated (in mouth) to break down starch
lingual lipase
Enzyme that stays neutral in the mouth
Activated when it enters the stomach and works to digest fat.
