Q

Functions of the digestive system are

A

The digestive system has to perform four processes:

  1. Ingestion – taking in food
  2. Digestion – breaking food down into smaller forms
  3. Absorption – passing the broken down food into the blood to feed the body
  4. Excretion – passing wastes from the body

Q

What does the mouth do in ingestion?

A

Digestion begins in the mouth

Food enters the mouth where it is moistened by saliva and chewed with the teeth and broken down into smaller pieces

Q

What does the pharynx do in ingestion?

A

From the mouth, food passes with the help of the tongue into the pharynx
It then enters the oesophagus
The epiglottis closes off the larynx to ensure food goes towards the stomach and not to the
lungs

Q

What does the oesophagus do in ingestion?

A

Commonly called the gullet
It ends in the stomach
It is lined with smooth muscles which contract and force the food into the stomach
At the end of the oesophagus, a muscle helps prevent food returning from the stomach to the oesophagus

Q

Functions of the stomach ( same as what does it do) 7

A

The major part of digestion takes place in the stomach
The stomach is a sac-like structure which receives food from the upper digestive tract
Involuntary muscles help the stomach mix the food with gastric juices
Gastric juices soften the food and begin to digest it
The food then becomes a creamy liquid called chyme
The stomach wall can absorb foods such as alcohol, sugar and water
The stomach acts as a storage tank holding food for up to 4 hours

Q

Functions of the small intestine (7)

A

The small intestine is narrow but about 6 m long
It continues the chemical digestion of food already started in the stomach
It also absorbs digested food into the blood
The duodenum’s walls produce a digestive juice to finish the breakdown of food
The pancreas, liver and gall bladder send juices to help the duodenum’s work
The jejunum and ilium have digestive juices as well, but their main job is to absorb
digested food through their walls into the blood which transports the food to cells.

15
Q

Functions of the large intestine

A

After the absorption of food into the small intestine, the fluid waste remaining is passed
into the first part of the large intestine, the colon
Water and some salts are removed from the fluid waste and enter the blood
The remaining solid waste (faeces) is stored in the last section of the colon, the rectum
It is later passed from the body through the anal canal.

Functions and features of the liver

A

Q

lemme be honest, this is a last minute thing so like yea the questions that mean the same thing keep changing but I’m just copy and pasting like u were with questions for chem so yea

A

great

19
Q

Function and feature of the pancreas

A

A gland which produces juices for digestion

20
Q

Function of the gall bladder

A

Stores bile which passes to the duodenum to break down fats

21
Q

How does physical activity affect the digestive system (3)

A
  • Over time, regular exercise helps strengthen the digestive tract and keep the gut
    healthy.
  • Exercising increases blood flow towards the muscles and digestive tract, which
can help move food through the digestive tract more efficiently
  • Regular physical activity stimulates the gut, whilst increasing intestinal activity,
so digestive problems are prevented (heartburn, gas, stomach cramps, bloating and
    constipation)
22
Q

Other ways physical activity affects the digestive system (3)

A
  • Exercise enhances gut flora affecting the balance of bacteria in your gut. This gut
flora plays an active role in protecting our immune system, the body’s natural
defence that keeps us healthy. It also inhibits the growth of more harmful bacteria,
  • Keeping active relieves stress and helps maintain a healthy weight two things that
    can affect digestion.
  • Allows your body to digest food and absorb nutrients more effectively.
23
Q

The upper digestive tract consists of

A

mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach
