Digestive System Flashcards
What does the digestive system do?
absorbs nutrients to feed the body
Functions of the digestive system are
The digestive system has to perform four processes:
- Ingestion – taking in food
- Digestion – breaking food down into smaller forms
- Absorption – passing the broken down food into the blood to feed the body
- Excretion – passing wastes from the body
Structure of the digestive system, the digestive system consists of
The mouth —–>The pharynx —–> The oesophagus —–> The stomach—–> The intestines
The Digestive Tract is also called
The Alimentary Canal
The digestive system is helped in its work by
salivary glands, the liver, the pancreas and the
gall bladder
Organs or body parts involved in ingestion
The mouth, pharynx and oesophagus
What does the mouth do in ingestion?
Digestion begins in the mouth
Food enters the mouth where it is moistened by saliva and chewed with the teeth and broken down into smaller pieces
What does the pharynx do in ingestion?
From the mouth, food passes with the help of the tongue into the pharynx
It then enters the oesophagus
The epiglottis closes off the larynx to ensure food goes towards the stomach and not to the
lungs
What does the oesophagus do in ingestion?
Commonly called the gullet
It ends in the stomach
It is lined with smooth muscles which contract and force the food into the stomach
At the end of the oesophagus, a muscle helps prevent food returning from the stomach to the oesophagus
Organs or body parts involved in digestion & absorption
The stomach and small intestine
Functions of the stomach ( same as what does it do) 7
The major part of digestion takes place in the stomach
The stomach is a sac-like structure which receives food from the upper digestive tract
Involuntary muscles help the stomach mix the food with gastric juices
Gastric juices soften the food and begin to digest it
The food then becomes a creamy liquid called chyme
The stomach wall can absorb foods such as alcohol, sugar and water
The stomach acts as a storage tank holding food for up to 4 hours
Functions of the small intestine (7)
The small intestine is narrow but about 6 m long
It continues the chemical digestion of food already started in the stomach
It also absorbs digested food into the blood
The duodenum’s walls produce a digestive juice to finish the breakdown of food
The pancreas, liver and gall bladder send juices to help the duodenum’s work
The jejunum and ilium have digestive juices as well, but their main job is to absorb
digested food through their walls into the blood which transports the food to cells.
The small intestine is divided into three parts:
The duodenum, The jejunum, The ilium
Organ or body parts involved in excretion
The large intestine
Functions of the large intestine
After the absorption of food into the small intestine, the fluid waste remaining is passed
into the first part of the large intestine, the colon
Water and some salts are removed from the fluid waste and enter the blood
The remaining solid waste (faeces) is stored in the last section of the colon, the rectum
It is later passed from the body through the anal canal.
