Stages of digestion?
A
- Ingestion (food entering the digestive system)
- Digestion (food being broken down into smaller molecules by peristalsis)
- Egestion (the release of undigested material)

What is peristalsis?
A
The process of food being moved through the body. The muscles work together to create wave-like motions in the gut wall.

What is assimilation?
A
The movement of digested food molecules into cells of the body where they are used.

What is villi?
A
Villi are tiny finger, shaped structures which increase the surface area.

Give three ways the small intestine is adapted for good nutrient absorption?

A
The liver - it is stored in the gall bladder before it is released via the bile duct into the small intestine.
