Digestive Physiology I Flashcards
Specific dynamic action
refers to the increase in metabolic rate and heat production due to the digestive process
the four general processes Assimilation
- Digestion
- Absorption
- secretion
4.motility
What increasing the efficiency of digestion along the GI tract
Compartmentalization increase the efficiency of digestion
Mucosa , submucosa , muscle layer and serosa are compoents of what system
The GI tract
where does the GI tract begin
In the mouth runs down the pharynx and into the esophagus into the stomach
Composition of gastric Juice
- Chief cells–> secret pepsinogen into lumen
2.Parietal cells –> secrete H into the stomach lumen - Enteroendocrine cells–> secret gastrin(Hormone) into blood
What acidifies the stomach
Secretion of HCl by the parietal cells this is a necessary for the stomach as it converts pepsinogen to pepsin which aids in digestion of proteins
GI tract in the small intestine
the small intestine performs most of the digestion along with the absorption of ingested nutrients
3 zones in the Small intestine
- Duodenum–> secretes pancreatic juice also where bile is secreated
- jejunum
- lleum
what is the role of the colon
The colon is involved in the absorption of water and inorganic ions, this is where the indigestible material is stored untill secreation
how does the length of the GI varies in different
Carnivores have short intestines
Herbivores have long intestines
Enterosymbionts
Symbiotic organisms which live withing the GI tract which aid in breaking down different compounds
The liver and its roles
- processing absorbed nutrients
- Secretion of bile
- synthesis of plasma proteins from absorbed amino acids
The pancreas is an accessory gland
secretes pancreatic juice to the duodenum
Acinar cells secrete enzymes which aid in digestion
