What salivary glands are unique to cats?
4 pairs
Parotid, Zygomatic, Mandibular, Sublingual
Cats only: molar salivary glands
What are the primary functions of the oral cavity?
Prehension, mastication, pharynx, saliva
What is the difference between ptyalism and pseudotyalism?
Ptyalism: pathologic overproduction of saliva
Pseudoptyalism: drooling caused by an inability or reluctance to swallow a normal amount of saliva
Ptyalism is caused by lesions located where?
Oral cavity
Esophagus
Salivary glands
Systemic or neurologic conditions

What are some causes of an inability to close the mouth?
Traumatic: TMJ/ mandibular fractures/ luxation
Neurologic: botulism or trigeminal neuropraxia

Tetanus
Craniomandibular osteopathy
Masticarotry muscle myositis
Neoplasia
TMJ issues
