Digestive enzymes Flashcards
where is amylase made
small intestine , pancreas , salivary glands
which enzymes are responsible for breaking down carbohydrate, proteins , lipids
carbohydrases break down carbohydrates into simple sugars but other carbohydrates eg starch are broken by carbohydrase called amylase into simple sugars eg maltose
proteins - are broken down by proteases into amino acids
lipids/fats - broken down by lipases into
glycerol and fatty acid
where are proteases made
stomach ( pepsin ), amylase and small intestine
where are lipases produced
pancreas , small intestine
bile is made in the ———- and stored in the ————
liver, gall bladder
how does bile help digestion of lipids
- speeds up rate of digestion of lipds
- bile converts large lipid droplets into smaller lipid droplets -( emulsifies lipids) ( which increases the surface area of the lipid droplets which increases rate of lipid breakdown by lipase )
- bile is an alkaline so neutralises stomach acid = creates alkaline conditions in the small intestine = increases the rate of lipid digestion by lipase
a lipid molecule consists of ———– attached to ———- molecules of ——-
one molecule of glycerol and three molecules of fatty acids
