Blood Flashcards
1
Q
what is blood
A
a tissue consisting of blood plasma in which red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are suspended
2
Q
what is the role of plasma
A
to transport dissolved substances around the body
3
Q
what does plasma transport
A
- soluble digestion products ( eg glucose ) from the small intestine to other organs
- carbon dioxide ( produced by aerobic respiration) from the organs to the lungs to be breathed out
- waste product urea from the liver to the kidneys to be excreted in urine
4
Q
what do red blood cells transport
A
transport oxygen from the lungs to the body cells
5
Q
what are the adaptations of red blood cells to transport oxygen across the body
A
- red blood cells contain the oxygen-carrying molecule haemoglobin ( haemoglobin binds to oxygen in the lungs to form the molecule oxyhaemoglobin the red blood cells then travel to organs where oxyhaemoglobin releases the oxygen
-no nucleus so there is more room for haemoglobin - RBCs have a biconcave disk - give the RBC a larger surface area so that oxygen diffuses in and out rapidly
6
Q
adaptations of WBC
A
- contain nucleus which contains DNA which encodes the instructions that the WBCS need to do their job
6
Q
what are platelets
A
tiny fragments of cells - their job is to help the blood to clot
