Digestive Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
What is the role of digestive enzymes?
A
Digestive enzymes break down large, insoluble molecules (i.e. starch, proteins and lipids) into smaller, soluble ones (i.e. sugars, amino acids, glycerol and fatty acids) that can pass more easily through the alimentary canal.
2
Q
How is starch broken down?
A
It is converted into maltose by the enzyme amylase.
3
Q
How is maltose broken down?
A
It is converted into glucose by the enzyme maltase.
4
Q
How are proteins broken down?
A
They are converted into amino acids by protease enzymes.
5
Q
How are lipids broken down?
A
They are converted into fatty acids and glycerol by lipase enzymes.
