What is a balanced diet?
A diet which gives all six essential nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals and water) in the correct proportions.
What is the function of carbohydrates, and where are they found?
They provide energy, and are found in pasta and rice.
What is the function of proteins, and where are they found?
They are needed for growth and tissue repair, and are found in meat and fish.
What is the function of lipids, and where are they found?
They provide energy, and are found in butter and oily fish.
What is the function of Vitamin A, and where is it found?
It helps to improve vision, and is found in liver and carrots.
What is the function of Vitamin C, and where is it found?
It is needed to prevent scurvy, and is found in most fruits.
What is the function of Vitamin D, and where is it found?
It is needed for the absorption of calcium, and is found in eggs.
What is the function of calcium, and where is it found?
It is needed to keep bones and teeth healthy, and is found in milk and cheese
What is the function of iron, and where is it found?
It is needed to produce haemoglobin for the blood, and is found in red meat.
What is the function of water, and where is it found?
A constant supply of water is necessary to replenish that lost through bodily processes such as urinating, breathing and sweating.
What is the function of dietary fibre, and where is it found?
Dietary fibre is a non-essential nutrient that helps to aid the movement of food through the alimentary canal (peristalsis). It is found in wholemeal bread and fruit.
Which three factors might a person’s energy requirements be dependent on?
- Activity Level: More active people require more energy.
- Age: Young people require more energy in order to facilitate growth.
- Pregnancy: Pregnant women require more energy so that their babies can fully develop.
