Digestion LG Flashcards
Where does digestion start and end
Mouth Oesopahgus Stomach Small intestine Large intesine rectum Anus
What are the three accessory organs in digestion
The liver pancreas and gallbladder
What do the accessory organs do
The liver produces bile in the stomach. The gallbladder stores this bile. The pancreas produces all three enzymes in the small intestine protease amylase lipase
What are the two things that bile does
Bile emulsifies fat meaning it makes them into tiny droplets which give the lipase more surface area to work on in the stomach. Bile also neutralizes the stomach because the stomach can get too acidic. This solution goes to the small intestine in which the enzymes require an alkali solution to work best
What do salivary glands do
They produce saliva which contains amylase which break down starch into maltose
What type of protease does the stomach release
It releases pepsin
Describe 3 adaptations of the small intestine
1) Thin walls for diffusion
2)Good supply for diffusion and absorption
3)Villi increases surface area and absorption
what does the large intestine do
It absorbs excess water from the food
