Digestion and enzymes Flashcards
Is an enzyme living?
No, they are just special proteins that can break large molecules into small molecules.
What does carbohydrase/amylase catalyse?
Starch
What is starch broken down into?
Sugar
What catalyses protein?
Protease
What does protein break down into?
amino acids
What does lipase catalyse?
fat
What is fat broken down into?
fatty acids and glycerol
Where are carbohydrates (starch) broken down?
in the mouth, stomach and small intestine
Where are proteins broken down?
in the stomach and small intestine
Where are fats broken down?
in the small intestine
What digests minerals, water and vitamins?
Nothing! they are already small enough to be absorbed by the blood
How do enzymes work?
They are designed to break down a specific molecule’s bonds to break it into its smaller components
What acid is stomach acid?
Hydrochloric acid (HCI)
Does stomach acid (HCI) help the break down of proteins?
Yes
