Digestion and Enzymes Flashcards
What are the three main macronutrients?
Protein, Carbohydrates and Fats are the main macronutrients in the digestive system
What is the order of the digestive system?
The order of the digestive system is the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine
What is the acid called that the stomach produces?
The stomach produces hydrochloric acid
What does hydrochloric acid do?
Hydrochloric acid kills bacteria and provides an environment for pepsin
Where does the food go after being in the stomach?
The food is squeezed into the small intestine
Where does the food go within the small intestine?
The food is absorbed into the bloodstream when entering the small intestine
What is the enzyme that gallbladder releases?
The gallbladder releases bile
Where is bile produced?
Bile is produced in the liver
What is the role of bile?
Bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fat
What is the lining of the small intestine?
The lining of the small intestine is an exchange surface
How is the exchange surface in the small intestine adapted?
The small intestine lining has villi which increase the surface area
Where does the food go after being absorbed into the bloodstream in the small intestine?
The remaining excess water goes into the large intestine and faeces is stored in the rectum
What is the enzyme that breaks down proteins?
Protease breaks down protein
What is the enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates?
Amylase breaks down carbohydrates
What is the enzyme that breaks down fats?
Lipids break down fat
What is protein broken down into?
Protein is broken down into amino acids
What are carbohydrates broken down into?
Carbohydrates are broken into glucose
What are fats broken down into?
Fats are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol
What is the role of enzymes?
Enzymes break down large molecules of food (energy) into smaller molecules
Which two organs are where enzymes are mostly produced?
Enzymes are mostly produced in the small intestine and pancreas
