Q

What are the process of testing leaves for starch?

A

The process of testing leaves for starch goes as follows:

  1. boil the leaf so its soft
  2. wash with ethanol to strip the chlorophyll
  3. rinse the leaf
  4. spread the leaf on a tile
  5. add iodine. the leaf will turn black if it contains starch.

Q

What does it mean if part of the leaf is yellow?

A

If part of a leaf is yellow, that means it does not have any chlorophyll therefore it cannot photosynthesise. It also means that it doesn’t have any starch so it will turn brown in iodine rather than iodine

Q

How can you investigate the effect of light intensity on photosynthesis?

A

You can investigate the effect of light intensity on photosynthesis by placing a lamp near a solution that has been placed inside of a tube and moving the lamp along a ruler to compare the number of bubbles that is produced. If the lamp is further away, there will be less bubble and less light intensity. Breaks have to be taken between reading in order to let the bubbles adjust to the change in light intensity.

16
Q

What is energy needed for?

A

Energy is needed for chemical reactions, active transport, movement and warmth

17
Q

What is oxygen debt?

A

Oxygen debt is the amount of oxygen needed to break down lactic acid into CO2 and H20 in the liver

18
Q

What is metabolism?

A

Metabolism refers to all the chemical reactions in a living organism

19
Q

What is metabolism responsible for?

A

Metabolism is responsible for respiration, making fats and proteins, breaking down excess protein into urea and turning glucose into starch/cellulose (in plants) or glycogen (in animals)
