Digestion and absorption of nutrients in MONOGASTRIC Flashcards
What is monogastrics?
One simple stomach (single compartment) with functional cecum
Difference between MONOGASTRICS and RUMINANTS
MONOGASTRICS
- Poor used of high-fiber feed except animal have functional cecum
- Do not chew a cud
RUMINANTS
- Microbial fermentation-effective used of high-fiber feed
- Chew a cud.
Functional cecum in monogastric is the…..
digestion of fibrous feed fermentation by
functional microbes
Characteristics monogastric digesting system (general)
• Consume nutrient-dense foods (grains, meat
products)
• Unable to handle a large amount of fiber or
roughage
• Mainly dependent on endogenous secretions
(enzymes, bile, etc.) for digestion
• Some (minor) microbial action in large intestine
(pH 7-8) – converting cellulose, hemicelluloses to
VFAs
• Cecum generally non-functional
Characteristics monogastric digesting system for AVIAN (general)
• Has no teeth; has saliva. Tongue helps push feed into the gullet (esophagus)
• Crop (diverticulum) – storage sac; feed softened and lubricated by mucus secreted by crop wall and saliva from mouth
• Proventiculus - “glandular stomach”- digestive juices
secreted - contain pepsin and HCl
• Gizzard (ventriculus) – very muscular - contains stones or grit; feed is crushed and ground
• Small intestine - major site of digestion and absorption
• Caeca - site of microbial digestion - relatively minor
due to fast passage (unable to digest any significant
amount of cellulose)
• Large intestine - little digestion
• Cloaca - large intestine, urinary and genital systems
meet. Urine and faeces are passed out together
from the “vent”.
