Digestion and Absorption Flashcards
When does MMC occur?
following emptying of stomach contents into small intestine
What triggers MMC?
motilin
What is MMC specific to?
small intestines, does not exist in large intestines
What does the large intestines have that is similar to MMC?
mass movement
Jejunum vs ileum: who has the greater surface area ?
duodenum and jejunum have highest “carpeting” and therefore more surface area
Does the same absorptive surface carry into large intestines?
no
Where do you find crypts? where do you find villi?
villi= small intestine crypts= both the large and small intestines
What is the role of crypts?
rejuvenation; the whole GI tract turns over in 5 days. The cell divisions push out of the crypt (new cells) then the new stem cells differeniate into absorption epitheliums or mucous secretors.
What is the most commonly absorbed food?
carbs! then protein, then fat
Give examples of monosacchrides
glucose, galatose and frutose
Where is the breakdown of carbs occurring?
inbetween the fingers of the “shag rug” which is where the enzyme is
