Digestion Flashcards
OESOPHAGUS
NO BREAKDOWN.
Joins mouth to stomach, food passes through by perystalsis.
STOMACH
Physical: Churns food into chyme. (It’s a muscular bag)
Chemical: Pepsin is produced, changing protein to peptide chains. Acid helps pepsin work, it’s also produced in the stomach. Chyme gradually goes into the small intestine.
LIVER
Bile produced in the gall bladder, and helps break down fat.
PANCREAS
Produced enzymes (Eg INSULIN) which help break down nutrients in the small intestine. (Pancreatic juices are the enzymes)
SMALL INTESTINE
Proteins & peptide chains changed into amino acids.
Sugars - simple sugars, eg: Glucose.
Fats - Fatty acids and glycerol.
Bile, pancreatic and intestinal juices are added to the food.
Digested food absorbed into blood.
Mouth
Physical: Teeth cut and grind food into particles.
Chemical: Salivary amylase breaks starch chains down to smaller chains of maltose.
