Digestion Flashcards
What does protein turn into ?
Amino acids
What does fat turn into
Fatty acids/ glicerol
What parts of the mouth help digestion ?
Chewing - to break big food into small pieces that can be swallowed
Saliva - contains mucas to make food soft and carbohydrate (amalyase) to chemically break down starch
How does the food get from the mouth to the stomach ?
The oesophagus by peristalsis
What parts of the stomach help with digestion ?
Churning - physically break food into small pieces
Hydrocloric acid - to kill bacteria and help the enzymes
Protease - breaks down protein into amino acids ( works best at PH2 )
What what does bile do ?
It neutralises and emulsifies
Where is bile made and stored ?
It’s made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder
What does the pancreas do ?
Produces carbohydrates and lipase and protease
What does the small intestine do ?
Absorbs the energy from the digested food into the blood via villi ( large surface area )
What does the large intestine do ?
Most of the food is absorbed - waste remains water is now reabsorbed
What does starch turn into ?
Glucose
