Digestion Flashcards
What does the mouth do?
- mechanically breaks down food
- saliva released (water mucus a3)
- a3 breaks down starch into sugar
What does the Oesophagus do?
squeezed from mouth to stomach using wave like motions (peristalsis)
What does the Stomach do?
- Gastric juices released (Pepsin & HCL acid
- Pepsin breaks down complicated protein molecules
- HCL acid -Kills Bacteria
- Helps pepsin work
- stops a3 working
What happens in the small intestine?
A sphincter lets chime (liquefied food) into the small intestine. the chime is mixed with pancreatic juices and bile (they stop pepsin and HCL acid working as well as break down food) digested food passes into the blood stream via the villi
What are Villi?
Small finger like projections that protrude from the intestinal wall
What does the large intestine do?
Re-absorbs water
1st part = Caecum
2nd part = Colon
what is the liver?
- Largest internal organ
- like a chemical factory
- glucose > Glycogen
- Poisons > broken down
- Vitamins and minerals > stored
- Heat is made
what does the Gall bladder do?
Stores bile in a muscle sack
what is the Pancreas’s job?
- side attachment
- creates insulin
- produces enzymes and alkali solution to neutralize stomach acids
what is the Appendix?
-NO
LONGER FUNCTIONS IN HUMANS
- in animals it hold bacteria to break down plants
