Circulatory System Flashcards
1
Q
Red blood cells
A
- formed in bone marrow
- contain hemoglobin that carry’s oxygen and CO2
- Have NO nucleus
2
Q
White Blood cells
A
- Larger that RBC’s
- Have a nucleus
- fight against bacteria and viruses
3
Q
Platelets
A
- fragments of RBC’s
- trigger formation of fibrin strands
4
Q
Plasma
A
- clear/Yellow liquid which blood cells are suspended in contains nutrients and waste products
5
Q
Arteries
A
- have thick walls to withstand pressure of blood from the heart
- carry blood around the body
6
Q
Veins
A
- Return blood to the heart
- have valves to prevent blood flowing wrong way
- have thinner walls as pressure is lower
7
Q
capillary’s
A
- 1 cell thick
- pass nutrients to nearby cells
- also carry waste away
- join into veins
8
Q
atrium
A
Where blood enter the heart
9
Q
Ventricles
A
Where blood is pumped out of the heart
- walls are thinker on left side to withstands (red) blood pressure
10
Q
Bicuspid & tricuspid valves
A
Stop blood back when atria contract
11
Q
semi-lunar valves
A
stops blood flowing back when ventricles contract
