Digestion Flashcards
What is physical digestion?
chewing, stomach churning
What is chemical digestion?
enzymes
What is digestion?
large insoluble molecules broken down into small soluble molecules
What is hydrolysis?
breaking down using water
What are carbohyrases?
hydrolyse carbohydrates into monosacharrides
What is lipases?
hydrolyse lipids into glycerol and fatty acids
What are proteases?
hydrolyse proteins into amino acids
What are the carbohyrases?
amylase (salivary glands + pancreas): stach to maltose
maltase (epithelial cells ileum): maltose to glucose
sucrase (epithelial cells ileum): sucrose to glucose + fructose
lactase (epithelial cells ileum): lactose to glucose + galactose
What do endopeptidases do?
hydrolyse internal peptide bonds in middle of protein turning proteins into smaller polypeptides
What do expopetidases do?
hydrolyse external peptide bonds on end of protein, produce dipeptides
What do dipeptidases do?
breaks dipeptide into two amino acids
What are examples of endopeptidases?
pepsin (stomach cells in gastric lining): protein to smaller polypeptides
trypsin (pancreas): protein to smaller polypeptides
What bond is hydrolysed in a triglyceride?
ester bond
what is the role of bile?
bile salts produced in liver split fats/ oils into small droplets called micelles
droplets increase surface area
process known as emulsification
bile stays associated with fatty acids / monoglycerides
What processes of digestion happen in the salivary glands?
chewing
amylase breaks starch -> maltose
What processes of digestion happen in the oesophagus?
peristalsis
What processes of digestion happen in the stomach?
pepsin breaks proteins -> polypeptides
What processes of digestion happen in the liver?
bile made and stored in gall bladder
What processes of digestion happen in the duodenium?
lipase breaks lipids -> fatty acids + glycerol
What processes of digestion happen in the ileum?
maltase: maltose -> glucose
sucrase: sucrose -> glucose + fructose
lactase: lactose -> glucose + galactose
What processes of digestion happen in the colon?
water reabsorption
What processes of digestion happen in the rectum?
egestion
