What is dental decay
Tooth decay begins when bacteria in your mouth make acids that attack the tooth’s surface (enamel).
This can lead to a small hole in a tooth, called a cavity.
If tooth decay is not treated, it can cause pain, infection, and even tooth loss.
Steps of dental decay
- Bacteria in mouth
- It feeds on sugars and food remains
- produces acid and a waste product
- PH falls to about 5
- Acid begins to dissolve the enamel
- Saliva will neutralise the acid
- Acid may dissolve to dentine
- Plaque is a mixture of bacteria and food remains
Ways dental decay can be prevented
- Regular flossing/brushing
- Mouthwash
- Floss
- Less sugary foods
