Digestion Flashcards
What is digestion?
The process of making the food into a form that can be taken into the body by a process called digestion
What is another name for an alimentary canal?
Gastro intestinal track or a GIT
What are the 2 actions or ways the food is broken down by?
Explain them:
Physical Breakdown is the breakdown of large food pieces into small piece. The teeth help with physical digestion.
Chemical Breakdown is the breakdown of large food molecules to small food molecules.
Which smaller units join to form:
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Fats
Carbohydrates: Glucose
Proteins: Amino Acids
Fats: Fatty Acids and Glyceral
What is an enzyme?
An enzyme is a chemical that speeds up a biological chemical reaction. It is a protein.
What breaks down food into smaller pieces?
Teeth
What coats the food and makes it easy to swallow?
Saliva
What begins the breakdown of food into glucose?
Amilacte enzymes
What tube connects the mouth to the stomach?
The oesophagus
Food moves down by a wave of muscular contraction called
Paristalisis
What do glands in the stomach walls produce?
Hydrochloric acid and the enzyme Pepsin
What does pepsin help with?
Pepsin helps with the digestion of protein into pepside
What is the importance of hydrochloride acid in the stomach?
It kills many tiles of bacteria in the food and provides the acid conditions in the pepsin that it needs to break down in the food
The small intestine is divided into what?
The duodenum
The jejunum
And the ileum
Where is bile made and stored?
Bile is made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder
The pancreas produces a juice containing enzymes. What does it digest?
A) protein
B) carbohydrates
C) fats
What are proteins broken down into?
Amino Acids
What are Carbohydrates broken down into?
Sugar or Glucose
What are Fats broken down into?
Fatty Acids and Glyceral
A) In the small intestine, what are all digested soluble food molecules absorbed into?
B) The wall of the Small intestines are carried by the blood to the what of the body?
A) wall
B) cells
The undigested food remains are passed into?
Large Intestine / Colon
The colon absorbs most of the water; leaving semi-solid substances called?
Faeces
What stores the faeces?
The rectum
Faeces are passed out through the anus by a process called what?
Egestion or Defication
