Digestion Flashcards
What are the two types of digestion ?
Physical digestion- Teeth cutting and chewing food.
Chemical digestion -Saliva (contains enzymes) dissolving food.
What do enzymes do?
Enzymes speed up a biochemical reaction - a biological catalyst
What is the muscular tube that forces food down the stomach by movement?
A muscular tube that forces food down to the stomach by movement called peristalsis
What is peristalsis ?
Peristalsis is muscular contractions in the oesophagus
What does the Epiglottis do?
Prevents food/water going down the trachea (wind pipe)
What is the stomach?
A muscular bag that traps food for a few hours
What is the name of the acid in the stomach?
Hydrochloric acid
What does the small intestine do?
• Nutrients are absorbed here into the blood stream.
• Amylase acts here to breakdown starch into maltose.
What does the liver do?
- Produces bile, which emulsifies fats (breaks them into small fat droplets).
- Detoxifies the body.
- Produces heat - body’s temperature is 37°C
What is bile?
• Made in the liver.
• Stored in the gall bladder.
• Acts in the small intestine
What does bile do?
- Emulsifies fats to maximise surface area.
- Contains a base to help neutralise stomach acid.
What is the pancreas and what does it do?
• Leaf shaped gland.
• Produces amylase to help digest starch.
• Amylase passes from pancreas into small intestine
What does the large intestine do?
Reabsorbs water from digested food and puts into the blood.
