Digestion Flashcards
what does carbohydrase break down carbohydrates into?
glucose
what does protease do?
digests protein into amino acids
what do lipases break fats into?
fatty acids and glycerol
what is iodine solution used to test for?
starch
what is the test for glucose ?
add benedicts solution and heat in a boiling water bath, glucose is present if the solution goes cloudy and changes from blue to green
what is used to test for protein?
biuret solution
how is food moved through the digestive system?
peristalsis
what is the role of liver in the digestive system?
produces bile, which emulsifies fats
what is the role of the gall bladder in the digestive system?
stores bile produced in the liver, then releases it into the small intestine
what enzymes do the pancreas produce?
carbohydrase and lipase
how does bile help with digestion?
helps lipase enzymes to digest fats, emulsifies the fats creating a bigger surface area for the lipase enzymes to work on
how do villi help absorption?
villi increase the surface area over which the small soluble molecules can be absorbed
name disadvantages of visking tubin
it is non-living
living cells are capable of pumping substances through their cells by active transport
diffusion gradient can not be maintained
why iron important to your diet?
needed to make haemoglobin
why is protein not used for energy?
the body cant store it
