Diffusion through cell membranes Flashcards
Where does gas exchange happen?
In the lungs.
What is the job of the lungs?
To transfer oxygen into the blood and to remove waste carbon dioxide.
How do the lungs complete gas exchange?
They contain millions of little air sacs called alveoli.
What gas exchange takes place in the alveoli?
Gas exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
How are the alveoli specialised to maximise diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide?
They have:
- An enormous surface area (about 75m² in humans)
- A moist lining for dissolving gases
- Very thin walls
- A good blood supply
What is the inside of the small intestine covered with?
Millions and millions of tiny projections called villi.
What do villi do?
They increase the surface area of the intestinal walls so that digested food is absorbed more quickly into the blood.
What do the villi have?
- A single layer of surface cells.
- A very good blood supply to assist with quick absorption.
