Diffusion, Osmosis & Active transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration gradient
Does diffusion require energy?
No, it is a passive process
What happens when there is a bigger difference in concentration?
The diffusion rate is increased
In diffusion, do particles move up or down the concentration gradient?
Down
What role do cell membranes play in diffusion?
They control the movement of substances in and out of cells
What is the definition of osmosis?
The net movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration
What is a partially permeable membrane?
A membrane with very small holes in it
What does net movement of water mean?
It means there is more water flowing in a particular direction
Name one area of the body where osmosis occurs
Tissue fluid
What is the difference between a concentrated and diluted solution?
A concentrated solution contains a large amount of a solute whereas a diluted solution contains only a very small amount of solute
If a cell contains lots of water, will it be dilute or concentrated?
Dilute
If a diluted cell was placed in very salty water, would water move in or out of the cell?
Out
What is the definition of active transport?
The movement of particles against a concentration gradient using energy released during respiration
In active transport, do particles move down or against a concentration gradient?
Against
Give an example of where active transport takes place in the body
Transporting nutrients from the blood to the gut - it goes against the concentration gradient
