Cells, tissues & Organs Flashcards
What are the two types of cell?
Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic
What is the difference between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic are complex e.g. animal cells, Prokaryotic are smaller and simpler e.g. bacteria
What are organelles?
Tiny structures within a cell
What are the 5 main organelles in human body cells?
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, ribosomes
What is the nucleus?
The part of a cell that contains the genetic material and controls the cells activities
What is the purpose of the cell membrane?
It controls the movement of substances in and out of a
What is the role of the cytoplasm?
It is the area of the cell that contains enzymes where most chemical reactions happen
What process occurs in the mitochondria?
Aerobic respiration
What is the role of the ribosomes?
Involved in protein synthesis
What are the 3 main organelles in plant cells?
Chloroplasts, cell wall and vacuole
What substance do chloroplasts contain?
Chlorophyll
What process occurs in the chloroplasts?
Photosynthesis
What is the cell wall made of and what does it provide to plant cells?
It contains cellulose which provides structural support to the cell
What is the vacuole in a plant cell?
The sap filled centre of a cell which provides it with support
What are tissues?
Groups of similar cells that work together to perform a particular function
