Diffusion experiments Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a high concentration to a Lower concentration
What colour is potassium manganate?
Purple
What is an experiment you could do to experiment diffusion with potassium manganate (VII)?
1) put some water in a beaker
2) put some potassium manganate in the beaker
3) leave for a while and the purple colour will diffuse out into the water
If you add more water to the potassium manganate experiment will the solution be more or less dilute?
More dilute
What is the symbol for ammonium ?
NH3
What is HCl?
Hydrochloric acid
What gas does hydrogen chloride give off?
Chlorine gas
In the diffusion experiment there is a glass tube with Colton wool soaked in aqueous ammonia at one end and cotton wool soaked in hydrochloric acid at the other end. What is the white ring formed ?
Ammonium chloride
Which end does the white ring form nearer to in the ammonia and hydrogen chloride diffusion experiment?
Forms nearer hydrochloric acid (away from ammonia ) ( ammonia particles are lighter )
What colour is bromine gas?
Brown
Describe an experiment using bromine gas to show diffusion
1) fill half a glass jar of bromine gas
2) separate the air and bromine gas with a glass block
3) remove glass plate
4) bromine gas diffuses into air due to random movement of gas particles so the air becomes brown
