Diffusion and Osmosis Flashcards
Diffusion
Random movement of particles from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration until equilibrium is reached
Selective Permeability
The property of a membrane that allows some materials to enter, while keeping others out
Osmosis
The diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane
Isotonic Solution
When the concentration of dissolved particles is the same inside and outside the cell
Hypertonic Solution
A solution in which the concentration of dissolved particles is higher than the concentration inside the cell
Hypotonic Solution
A solution in which concentration of dissolved particles is lower than the concentration inside the cell
Endocytosis
Transport of large substances into the cell
Exocytosis
Releases substances from inside the cell to outside the cell
Pinocytosis
Liquid being inserted into the cell; the budding of small vesicles from the cell membrane.
Phagocytosis
A type of endocytosis in which a cell engulfs large particles or whole cells
