Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
It is the spreading out of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Where does diffusion happen?
In solutions and gases - the particles in these substances are free to move about randomly.
What is the simplest type of diffusion?
Is when gases diffuse each other.
What two things make the diffusion rate faster?
The bigger the concentration gradient
Higher temperature
How can dissolved substances move in and out of cells?
By diffusion.
What can diffuse through cell membranes?
Very small molecules such as oxygen, glucose, amino acids and water.
Why can’t starch and proteins fit through a cell membrane?
Because they are big molecules.
What happens if there is a large surface area of the membrane?
There is a faster diffusion rate - because more particles can move through.
