Cells Flashcards
Describe a eukaryotic cell?
A eukaryotic cell are complex and include all animal and plant cells.
Describe a prokaryotic cell compared to a eukaryotic cell?
A prokaryotic cell is much smaller and simpler than a eukaryotic cell.
What are the different parts of a cell called?
They are called subcellular structures.
What is inside an animal cell?
An animal cell contains a nucleus, cytoplasm, a cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes.
What does a nucleus do?
A nucleus contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell.
What does the cytoplasm do?
The cytoplasm is a gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions take place. It contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions.
What does the cell membrane do?
The cell membrane holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out.
What does the mitochondria do?
The mitochondria is where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration take place - Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work.
What do ribosomes do?
The ribosomes are where proteins are made in the cell.
What is inside a plant cell?
A plant cell has everything an animal cell but a few extras such as the cell wall, the permanent vacuole and the chloroplasts.
What does the cell wall do?
The cell wall is made of cellulose and it supports the cell and strengthens it.
What does the vacuole do?
The vacuole contains cell sap, a weak solution of sugar and salts.
What do the chloroplasts do?
The chloroplasts are where photosynthesis occurs (which makes food for the plant) - They also contain a green substance named chlorophyll which absorbs the light needed for photosynthesis.
What type of cell is bacteria?
Bacteria are prokaryotes.
What is not inside a bacterial cell?
It does not contain chloroplasts or mitochondria.
