Diffusion Flashcards
1
Q
Why is diffusion passive?
A
- all particles constantly in motion due to KE they possess
- motion is random & constantly bouncing off each other
- energy is natural rather than ATP
2
Q
Def of diffusion
A
The net movement of molecules or ions from a highly concentrated region to a lower conc region until evenly distributed
3
Q
What is facilitated diffusion?
A
- a passive process that relies on the inbuilt KE of the diffusing molecules
- involves protein channels & carrier proteins
4
Q
Protein channels
A
- form water-filled hydrophillic channels
- selective& open specifically so has control
- ions bind with protein so it changes shape in a way that closes it to one aide if mem and opens it to the other side
5
Q
Carrier proteins
A
- they span the plasma membrane
- when a molecule is specific to protein that is present, it binds to protein
- causes it to change shape in a way that the molecule is released inside of men
