Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the spreading out of particles, resulting in a net movement, from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
What states of matter can diffusion occur in and why?
Gases and liquids because particles can move about randomly.
What can increase diffusion rate?
Concentration gradient- When there’s a larger difference in concentration.
Temperature- When the temperature is high, because particles can move around faster.
Surface area- When there’s a larger area, more particles can diffuse through at a time.
How do specific particles get through the cell membrane?
They diffuse. However, if a particle or molecule is too big, it won’t fit.
