Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion
It is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration
Ammonia particles and hydrogen particles diffuse along a tube. Why is ammonia faster?
Ammonia particles are smaller and lighter than gas particles which means they can diffuse faster along the tube
What is the word equation for the ammonia and hydrochloric…
Ammonia + hydrochloric acid (arrow) Ammonium chloride
How are the particles arranged in a gas
They are spread out which allows them to move quicker in random directions
Why does gas take the shape of its container
The particles will continue to travel in a straight line until they hit something
What is the most obvious example of diffusion…
Smell
Why would it take a while for the smell of the flowers to fill a room
Because the particles from the gas all collide with each other
What does the word concentration mean
A measure of how many particles are in a given volume
Is diffusion a physical change or a chemical change
Physical
Why do gasses diffuse faster than liquids
Because they have more kinetic energy
What happened to bromine after it has been diffused
The whole container fills up
Name three factors that affect how quickly particles diffuse
Gasses are faster than solids
Smaller particles move faster than larger ones
Temperature increases rate of diffusion
