diffusion Flashcards
what is diffusion
-movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to low down the concentration gradient
-may or may not be across a membrane
-passive process doesnt involve energy/ ATP
-particles due to their kinetic energy
list the molecules that can move across membrane by simple diffusion
-oxygen
-co2
-fatty acids, glycerol
-vitamins
-hormones
what is dynamic equilibrium in diffusion
equal amounts of molecules move from one side to the other at the same time
what is facilitated diffusion
when too large molecules dont diffuse directly through phospholipid bilayer but through carrier or channel protein
-down concentration gradient
-no ATP required .passive
what factors affect rate of diffusion and how?
-temp= as temp increases rate of diffusion increases as paricles have more kinetic energy
-diffusion distance= shorter= faster rate of diffusion
-surface area= bigger surface area = more space area that molecules can more across so faster
-size of diffusing particle = smaller = faster rate
-concentration gradient = greater difference = faster at trying to achieve equilibrium
draw and explain the graph of simple and facilitated diffusion
what is fick’s law
rate of diffusion (a) surface area x concentration gradient / diffusion distance
how does surface area to volume affect rate of diffusion
the larger the surface area to volume ratio the faster the rate of diffusion
