diffusion Flashcards
1
Q
what is diffusion?
A
diffusion is the random net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, down a concentration gradient.
this occurs until an equilibrium is reached.
2
Q
factors that affect the rate of diffusion:
A
temperature - the higher the temperature, the more kinetic energy the particles will have, so they will mix and move more quickly.
size of particles - the larger the particles, the slower the movement and hence the rate of diffusion.
concentration gradient - the greater the difference in concentration, the faster the rate of diffusion.
