What is Diffraction
A
When waves pass through a gap, they spread out

What does the amount of Diffraction depend on?
A
The size of the wavelength, compared to the size of the gap

What is a diffraction grating?
A
A series of narrow, parallel slits
When light is shone at the diffraction grating Several great sharp lines can be seen as shown in the diagram to the right

Why is there no light between the Maxima
A
The path difference is not a whole number of wavelengths, so the waves arrive out of phase and interfere destructively
