Differentiation Flashcards
How do you differentiate?
Times the coefficient of X by the power and take 1 away from the power. If the function is f(x) then the differentiation is f’(x).
How do you use differentiation to find a gradient?
Differentiate a function and substitute in the x value at the point where you want to find the gradient.
How do you find a second order derivative?
Differentiate the function twice. Written f’‘(x).
What is a stationary point on a graph?
A point at which the gradient is 0. They can be either a maximum, minimum or flat.
How do you know if a stationary point is a maximum, minimum or flat?
If f’‘(x)<0 then the point is a maximum. If f’‘(x)>0 the point is a minimum. If f’‘(x)=0 then the stationary point is flat.
