Differential Reinforcement Flashcards
What is Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior (DRA) and provide an example when it will be used
Reinforces a behavior that serves as an acceptable alternative to the challenging behavior
Example: When a child typically screams for attention, you reinforce them for raising their hand instead. Each time they raise their hand appropriately, they receive attention, while screaming receives no reaction.
What is Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behavior (DRI) and provide an example and provide an example of when it will be used
Reinforces behaviors that physically cannot occur at the same time as the challenging behavior
Example: For a child who hits others, you might reinforce keeping hands in pockets or folded in lap when frustrated, as they cannot hit while their hands are occupied this way.
What is Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior (DRO) and provide an example when it will be used
Reinforces the absence of the challenging behavior during a specified interval
Example: If a student typically calls out in class every 3 minutes, you might give a token after every 5-minute period where no calling out occurs.
What is Differential Reinforcement of Low Rates of Behavior (DRL) and provide an example and provide an example of when it will be used
Reinforces when the challenging behavior occurs less frequently than before
Example: If a child typically interrupts 20 times during a 30-minute session, you might reinforce them when interruptions decrease to 15 times, then gradually lower the criterion.
What is Differential Reinforcement of High Rates of Behavior (DRH) and provide an example and provide an example of when it will be used
Reinforces when appropriate behaviors occur at or above a specified rate
Example: Providing reinforcement when a child completes at least 10 math problems during a work period, gradually increasing the requirement.
What is Differential Reinforcement of Diminishing Rates (DRD) and provide an example and provide an example of when it will be used
Reinforces progressively lower rates of the behavior
Example: If a child asks for breaks 15 times per hour, you might initially reinforce when they ask 12 times or less, then 9 times or less, etc.
What is Differential Reinforcement of Communication (DRC) and provide an example of when it will be used
Reinforces appropriate communication as an alternative to challenging behavior
Example: Teaching and reinforcing a child to say “I need space” instead of pushing others away.
