Differential Reinforcement Flashcards
Differential Reinforcement of Other Behaviors (DRO)
Purpose- Reduce interfering behaviors to zero occurrences by increasing the amount of time between occurrences.
Definition- Reinforcement is provided when the learner is NOT engaging in the interfering behavior.
Example- Student receives a reinforcer when he goes without hitting himself for five minutes.
Differential Reinforcement of Low Rates or Behavior (DRL)
Purpose- Reduce the number of interfering behavior occurrences to acceptable levels.
Definition- Reinforcement is provided if the learner engagement in the interfering behavior was at or below a predetermined criterion.
Example- Student receives a reinforcer when she uses the water fountain 5 or less times a day during the school day.
Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior (DRA)
Purpose- Reduce the interfering behavior by reinforcing a functional alternative behavior.
Definition- Reinforcement is provided when the learner is engaging in a specific desired behavior other than the interfering behavior.
Example- Student receives a reinforcer when he raises his hand to answer the teacher’s question.
Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behavior (DRI)
Purpose- Reduce the interfering behavior by reinforcing a functional incompatible behavior.
Definition- Reinforcement is provided when the learner is engaging in a behavior that he physically impossible to do while exhibiting the interfering behavior.
Example- Student receives a reinforcer when she walks in the hallway.
