Different ways of Operant Learning Flashcards
What are the different ways of Operant Learning?
- Reinforcement
- Positive Reinforcement
- Negative Reinforcement
- Punishment
- Positive Punishment
- Negative Punishment
What are the 2 types of reinforcements that are commonly used?
- Continuous Reinforcement
2. Intermittent Reinforcement
Describe Reinforcement
Reinforcement is any stimulus that increases the chance of a behavior being repeated.
Describe Punishment
Punishment is any stimulus that decreases the chance of a behavior being repeated.
Describe Positive Reinforcement
Positive Reinforcement involves the presentation of something pleasant (like food) that is likely to strengthen a behavior response.
It increases likelihood of behavior being repeated.
Describe Negative Reinforcement
Negative Reinforcement involves the removal of something unpleasant (like escaping a fearful stimulus) that strengthens behavior response.
Describe Positive Punishment
Positive Punishment involves the application of something unpleasant or aversive (such as a squirt of water, verbal reprimand, shock, threaten with newspaper, etc)
Describe Negative Punishment
Negative Punishment involves the removal of something pleasant (such as play or social interaction)
Describe Continuous Reinforcement
- Provide reinforcement every single time the animal does something you want repeated.
- BEST WAY to teach a NEW behavior.
- RAPID learning response
Describe Intermittent Reinforcement
- Periodically when animal performs desired behavior
- Useful for MAINTAINING an already established behavior.
- Reinforcement that makes behavior most RESISTANT to EXTINCTION.
What is Continuous Reinforcement? Useful for?
- When you provide reinforcement every single time the animal does something you want to be repeated.
- BEST way to teach NEW behavior.
- Rapid learning response
What is Intermittent Reinforcement? Useful for? resistant or not?
- When you provide reinforcement PERIODICALLY when an animal performs the desired behavior.
- Useful for maintaining already established behavior.
- Reinforcement that makes behavior most resistant to extinction.
