Different types of organizations Flashcards
Intergovernmental Organisation (IGO)
IO with a membership made up of three or more states.
An IGO is an organization composed primarily of sovereign states, or of other intergovernmental organizations. IGOs are established by treaty or other agreement that acts as a charter creating the group. Examples include the United Nations, the World Bank, or the European Union.
International Institution
Set of implicit or explicit principles, norms, rules, and decision-making procedures around which actors’ expectations converge in a given area of IR
Transnational Organization
IO made up of private actors (e.g. transnational corporations, religious movements, NGOs,
epistemic communities, social movements). An entity that operates beyond national boundaries with the support of at least one nation. In the last 50 years, transnational rule-making processes could be considered the most apparent expression of the shift from state-driven politics and intergovernmental cooperation to non-state-driven governance in world affairs. Transnational relations have been defined as “contacts, coalitions, and interactions across state boundaries that are not controlled by the central foreign policy organs of governments.”
Multinational company (MNC)
A multinational company (MNC) is a corporate organization that owns or controls production of goods or services in at least one country other than its home country.
Examples: Google; Nestle; Microsoft
International hybrid organization
Hybrid organizations are those international organizations whose membership comprises both states and civil society members. The states may be represented by government departments or agencies; while civil society, as we have seen earlier, can be just about anyone or any organization.
Non-governmental organization (NGO)
A non-profit group that functions independently of any government. NGOs, sometimes called civil societies, are organized on community, national and international levels to serve a social or political goal such as humanitarian causes or the environment.
