Define crime
Any behaviour which breaks the criminal law of society
Define deviance
Any behaviour which breaks the dominant norms of society
Define white collar crime
Crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation .
What qualifies as white collar crime?
Non violent crimes usually committed in commercial situations for financial gain
Define corporate crime
Refers to criminal offences committed by persons during the course of legitimate business activities.
What does corporate crime involve?
Non violent acts such as; fraud, tax evasion, insider trading and money laundering
What is state corporate crime?
When corporations rely on states for financial support commit crimes to gain profits illegally
What is organised white collar crime?
Includes groups such as the mafia, triads, the krays
What is professional crime?
This is where someone uses special skills, experiences, methods or instruments to commit crime whilst considering the activity to be their basic occupation or an additional source of income
What are moral crimes?
Behaviours society has banned or limited because they are believed to run contrary to social norms, customs and values
What is involved in moral crimes?
Acts that interfere with the operations of society and the ability to function efficiently. They conflict with social policy and current public opinion
Examples of moral crime
Prostitution, vagrancy, assisted suicide, illegal gambling, under age drinking and illegal drug use
Define complainant
A person who makes a formal complaint to say they have been harmed
What is euthanasia?
The act of deliberately ending a persons life to relieve suffering. Mostly done by a doctor
What is assisted suicide?
The act of deliberately assisting or encouraging another person to kill themselves
What is the law for assisted suicide?
Illegal under the terms of suicide act 1961 and is punishable of up to 14 years in prison
What is the law regarding euthanasia?
Regarded as either manslaughter or murder. Maximum penalty s life imprisonment
What is meant by state crime?
Committed by or with the authority of state agencies- war crimes or torture. Can occur where the behaviour of state is seen as acceptable
What is the state?
A nation or territory organised as a political community under one government
What is technological crime?
The use of any computer network for crime

Downloading illegal images Identity theft Misuse card details Post and download copyrighted materials Post hate and abuse Grooming
Define individual crime
Hate crime, honour killings and domestic violence
Define hate crime
Any crime which is perceived by the victim or any other person as being motivated by hate based on race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or transgender
Define honour crime
Killing of a relative who is perceived to have brought dishonour on the family
Examples of honour crime
Acid attacks, abduction, mutilations, beatings and murder
Who is likely to be a victim of honour crime?
Female relative
25% involved people under 18
Usually south Asian/ Middle Eastern families
Fixed marriage and female genital mutilation
What is domestic abuse?
Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between aged 16 or over who are intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality
Who is likely to be a victim of domestic violence?
1.9 million adults age 16-59 march 16-march 17
1.2 million women, 713,000 men
