Thompson test
Squeeze calf
+=no plantarflexion →achilles tendon
Homan’s sign
Dorsiflex foot
+=pain → DVT
Moses sign
Compression of calf muscles
+=pain→ posterior tibial v. (DVT)
Plantar fasciitis
Worse with first few steps and improves throughout day. Tender on calcaneous.
Morton’s neuroma
Thickening of tissues that surrounds nerve between toes. Common between 3rd and 4th toes
Turf toe
Inflammation and pain at base of 1st MTP. Caused by hyperextension of toe.
Achilles tendonitis
Cause: tight calf muscles, sudden change in activity causes microtears
Empty can test
Press down on forearms as patient resists
+=pain → supraspinatus
Drop-arm test
Arms out front and slowly drop
+=sudden drop→supraspinatus
Apprehension test (“baseball”)
Force arm into external rotation
+=apprehensive of repeat dislocation → glenohumeral instability
Sulcus sign
Grab their elbow and pull it down
+=Indention below acromion → glenohumeral instability
Yergason Test
Supinate and externally rotate
+=pain → bicipital tendonitis
Speed’s Test
Arms out front and you resist their arm raising
+=Pain in bicipital groove → bicipital tendonitis
Neer impingement
Flex their shoulder
+=pain → rotator cuff impingement
Hawkins test
Internally rotate their shoulder (like a hawk)
+=pain → rotator cuff or subacromial bursa impingement
Apley Scratch test (ROM)
They reach behind their back and try to tough hands together (from top and bottom)
Lift-Off test
Behind their back they push away
+=weakness → subscapularis
Valgus stress test to elbow
+=pain → Injury to MCL
Varus stress test to elbow
+=pain → Injury to LCL
Tinel test
Ulnar nerve entrapment
Tap in ulnar groove→ tingling → ulnar nerve entrapment, cubital tunnel syndrome
Golfer’s elbow test
Forearm in supination + wrist flexion
→medial epicondylitis
Tennis elbow (Cozen’s test)
Forearm in pronation + wrist extension
→lateral epicondylitis
Little League elbow is pain over where?
Medial epicondyle
Radial head instability/”Nursemaid’s elbow”
Annular ligament tear/radial head subluxation
From grabbing a child’s arm…they’ll keep arm pronated and close to body
