Q

what are the different types of solids and what makes them different?

A

atomic: consists of invididual atoms packed in a regular crystalline array with relatively weak dispersion forces between the atoms. only the noble gases form atomic solids at low temp
metallic: atomis with a low ist ionisation energy form similar array as atomic, valence electrons form a delocalised cloud of electrons
ionic: formed by ions
molecular: molecules held together by intermolecular forces

network covalent: atoms linked by strong covalent bonds in an extensive 3 dimensional network through the whole solid

Q

what are some properties of liquids?

A
  • kinetic energy of molecules is comparable to intermoleculer forces
  • able to flow
  • no fixed shape, high density, has a surface and surface tension
  • viscosity that can be explained by intermoleculer forces
